Workspaces has been touring real home offices since 2020. 540 interviews and counting, averaging 12 items per desk. Every number on this page is recounted from scratch each time a new tour publishes.
02 · The monopoly

One laptop rules everything.
The MacBook Pro appears in 62% of tours. Number two, the Apple Magic Keyboard, is at 25%. By rank twenty you're at 5%: a tiny head and a 3,763-product tail.
03 · The landscape

Of the top ten, 7 are Apple.
The only non-Apple products to crack the top ten: Herman Miller Aeron and Logitech MX Master 3 and Logitech MX Master 3S. Apple isn't a brand here so much as the landscape everything else sits on.
04 · The long tail

Almost everything appears exactly once.
Of 3,763 distinct products, 3,469 show up on a single desk and never again. Only 50 items reach ten or more appearances. Everything else is personal.
05 · The stereotype

The "default desk" barely exists.
MacBook Pro + Magic Keyboard: 17% of desks. Add the Magic Trackpad and the full stereotype is down to just 33 desks. Even the most predictable setup imaginable is a minority.

The ecosystem does the work.
81% of MacBook Pro owners have at least one more Apple product on the desk. Yet no category has a majority ruler: the Apple Magic Keyboard leads keyboards at 35%, and desks are the most contested at 13%.

How we counted

Written lists only
Every count comes from the gear list each guest submits with their tour. 540 interviews and counting.

Variants merged
The same normalizer that powers our gear database. A 14″ and a 16″ MacBook Pro count as one item.

Once per tour
An item counts at most once per interview, no matter how many times it shows up.
04
Photos don't count
Gear that's visible but unnamed is skipped. If anything, these numbers run low.
05
Recounted weekly
Everything recomputes when a new tour publishes. Trends compare the newest 100 tours to the archive before them.
